Divisions

Apprentice (grades 10-12)*
Scholar (undergraduate and graduate students)


* The apprentice division is open to public or private high school students, grades 10 through 12, who attend school in Polk, Dallas, Madison, Warren, Marshall, Marion, and Jasper counties.

What we're looking for:

  • Original songs between 2.5 and 5 minutes long. No arrangements of existing tunes!
  • SATB works with up to 8-part divisi
  • A capella or piano accompaniment

The text for your work can be one of your choosing, just make sure that if it is copyrighted, you obtain permission from the author to use it. Need help finding a poem to use? Try some of the links below to find your inspiration.

Prizes

The winner of the Apprentice Division will receive $500 in cash and $500 to donate to the music program of his or her choice. This can be a school or church program, preferably one that has been instrumental in your musical development.

The winner of the Scholar Program will receive a $1,500 cash prize
(subject to taxation)

Judges

Dr. Timothy McMillin
Dr. Timothy McMillin

Dr. Timothy A. McMillin accepted the position of Artistic Director and Conductor for the Des Moines Vocal Arts Ensemble in the fall of 2008.

In addition to his work with the Des Moines Vocal Arts Ensemble, Dr. McMillin is the Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Music at Simpson College, where he directs three choral ensembles, is on the voice faculty, teaches classes in conducting, music literature and choral studies, and mentors future choral conductors. Before his appointment at Simpson College, Dr. McMillin directed choirs in Minnesota where he created and lead award-winning high school programs.

Matt Oltman
Matthew Oltman

Matt Oltman is the Music Director Emeritus for the GRAMMY Award-winning men's ensemble, Chanticleer. In 2009 he took over artistic leadership of the company. During his decade with the ensemble, Oltman appeared on 12 critically acclaimed recordings, toured extensively throughout North America, Europe and Asia, and led numerous workshops and masterclasses with choristers world-wide. In March of 2010 he conducted over 450 high school choral and orchestral students from across the country. He is the editor of the Chanticleer choral series, published by Hinshaw Music and was deeply involved in the publication of Chanticleer's Silver Jubilee Anthology of Music and A Chanticleer Christmas Anthology. Originally from Des Moines, Iowa, Oltman earned a B.M. in performance from Simpson College and an M.A. in performance from the University of York in England.

David Brunner
David Brunner

David Brunner is a conductor and composer currently serving as professor of music and director of choral activities at the University of Central Florida. He has received numerous awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and in 2000 was named Raymond W. Brock Commissioned Composer by the ACDA. He has written over 100 works and is published exclusively through Boosey & Hawkes, Inc.

Ryan Beeken
Ryan Beeken

Ryan Beeken directed high school choirs for over 15 years. An Iowa native and graduate of Drake University, Beeken is currently pursuing a D.M.A. in choral conducting from Michigan State University. During his years at Waukee High School, choirs under his direction performed at state, regional, and national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA).
